[Incunabula]. [Bible. Latin. 1495]. [BIBLIA... - Lot 2 - Kâ-Mondo
[Incunabula]. [Bible. Latin. 1495]. [BIBLIA integra, summata, disctincta, accuratius reemendata]. Basel, Froben, 1495 [on the colophon]: "Finit per Johannem Froben. civem Basiliensem. Anno domini. M.cccc.xcv. sexto Kalendas Novembres". Fort in-8, [497 (out of 508)] f., pastiche binding in brown basane, spine with 4 nerves, gilt title and date, cold fleurons, boards framed with multiple fillets and decorated with 2 roulettes and 4 angular fleurons, all in cold (spine rubbed, soiling, flaws in margins, some trimmed short; mouill. at end of vol, damage without missing on f. Cc1, qq. letter mq. on corner of f. I3; 11 leaves missing). Second edition of this famous Bible without commentary or glosses, commonly called the "Poor Man's Bible". The printer Jean Froben published a first version in 1491. It is the first Bible printed in this small octavo format and therefore really portable. A real typographical achievement, it required the creation and casting of special tiny characters, most probably designed by Amerbach. Initials painted in red at the time on typographed waiting letters. This copy, however, lacks the following carefully prepared: f. AA1 (title), BB4 (with fig., photogr. after BnF ex. inserted), 1 f. to the quire Dd, f. Ee1, 1 f. to the quire Ll, 6 f. to the quire E (and last). Provenance: Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Hautefontaine, Marne (manuscript bookplate dated 1682); modern stamp scratched on 2 introductory f. Attached are 3 loose fragments of old endpapers, one of which bears the engraved armorial bookplate of J.-P. Lacave-Laplagne-Barris (imperial prosecutor, Gers, 19th c.). (Bibles Paris, 752; HC 3118; GW 4275; Pellechet 2335).
