[Book of the XVIth c.]. EQUICOLA (Mario).... - Lot 7 - Kâ-Mondo
[Book of the XVIth c.]. EQUICOLA (Mario). Small in-8 [155 x 104 mm], 223-[1] f. (the last one blank), contemporary black morocco, three-ribbed spine, decorated with double crossed fillets, boards decorated with a large cold fleuron decoration, black edges. (Traces of restoration, renewed endpapers, some old annotations. Missing leaf K8). Small edition of one of the most famous treatises on love composed during the Renaissance, by the humanist scholar Mario Equicola (ca. 1470-1525) attached to Isabella of Este and the court of Mantua. The work is part of the Neoplatonic tradition of "discussions of love" inherited from Marsilio Ficino and takes the form of a veritable encyclopedia on the subject of love in its most varied forms. To establish this classification, Equicola summons the authors of Antiquity, but also Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio and before him Jean de Meun; Ficino, Pico della Mirandola or Bembo for the modern ones. The first edition was published in 1525, shortly before Equicola's death, and the work went through twelve Italian editions in the sixteenth century, all of which were published in Venice. This is the fourth one, after the one of 1525 and two editions in 1526. Title in a woodcut frame, a woodcut in the text, typographical mark. Italic characters. Italian binding of the time. (Brunet II, 1034: "Edition no less rare than the first"; Stephen Kolsky, Mario Equicola, The real broker, 320; USTC 828209).
