[Sixteenth century book]. [Albania]. LAVARDIN (Jacques de). History of Georges Castriot, nicknamed Scanderbeg, king of Albania. Contenant ses illustres faicts d'armes, & mémorable victoires à l'encontre des Turcs A Paris, chez G. Chaudiere, 1597. Fort in-8, [20]-447-[13] f. (table, errata), figs, contemporary soft vellum, smooth spine, title and date in ink (title soiled but not severe, a few ff. a little browned, small worm's work in margin in 2nd half of volume, pale wetness at end of volume, only visible on a few corners in margin, more sustained on last 8 f. of table, tear without missing f.334). Second edition of this chronicle of the life and deeds of Scanderbeg, Albanian lord of the 15th century who distinguished himself by his opposition to the Ottoman Empire, and who is still considered in Albania as a national hero. This edition, revised and enlarged by the author, has been continued "until the death & tomb of Mohammed the second, monarch of the Turks. It is illustrated with two full-page copper-engraved portraits, one of Scanderberg, the other of Mahomet II. The introductory leaves contain, as a tribute to the author, a sonnet by Ronsard, and an ode by Amadis Jamyn. (USTC 5966).
