ANDRÉ (Yves-Marie). OEuvres du feu P. André A Paris, chez Ganeau, 1766-1767. 4 vols. in-12, contemporary speckled tan calf, spine with 5 nerves, red and green title and greeks, ornamented caissons, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges (snagging of a headband, 2 corners emitted, worm spot on a spine, moderate brownings). First edition of this collection of works by Father André (1675-1764), a Jesuit scholar and defender of Malebranche and Cartesianism, who was for this commitment abused by the directors of his order. Often moved from one college to another, he ended his career as royal professor of mathematics in Caen. Attached, by the same author : ESSAI sur le beau. In Paris, at L. E. Ganeau, 1770. In-12, VI p., [2] f. (approb.), 501 p., contemporary speckled tan calf, spine with 5 nerves, gilt title, ornate caissons, gilt fillet on the edges, marbled edges (2 corners and head cover rubbed, worms in the foot margins from the beginning to p.135). New enlarged edition of one of the first treatises of aesthetics published in French, the most complete one composed before the author's death. It is increased by 6 speeches, on the modus, on the decorum, on the graces, on the love of the beautiful, and on the disinterested love. Provenance: old handwritten initials C and G to the titles of 5 volumes; archbishopric of Paris (label).
