CYPRIAN (Carmelite). The shield of Christian... - Lot 91 - Kâ-Mondo
CYPRIAN (Carmelite). The shield of Christian piety, drawn from four maxims of eternity, for the great, & for the small, & for all kinds of states. Translated from Italian into French by the R.P. Cyprien de la Nativité de La Vierge, Carme déchaussé In Brussels, by P. Vleugart, 1663. In-8, [8] f., 263 p., pl., supple parchment with period covers, smooth spine, title in ink (stain on the lower cover, damage to one endpaper, seam a little distended). First edition of this work of piety, aimed at the edification of Christians of all conditions. It is illustrated with 8 copper-engraved plates by Jean Galle (including the frontispiece), most of them offering scenes evoking Hell. Provenance: nuns of Sainte-Ursule de Bruxelles (old handwritten bookplate on the title); Armand de Terwangne, 19th c., who had a solid library on alchemy and occultism (bookplate).
