[QUESNAY (François)] ; DUPONT DE NEMOURS (Pierre-Samuel) [Ed.] Physiocracy, or natural constitution of the most advantageous government to the human race. Collection published by Du Pont A Leyde, and is in Paris, chez Merlin, 1768. In-8, CXX-172 p., fr., red half-chagrin with 19th c. corner, spine with 5 nerves decorated in cold, gilt title, double gilt fillet bordering the caissons, gilt fillet on the boards (small stains on the spine; foxing, yellowed pages, last page soiled). Extremely rare first edition of the first volume, in the second issue (only a few copies of the first issue are known with the Peking address). A second volume had appeared earlier, in 1767. The work constitutes the main publication of the physiocrat school. It contains a large number of works by Quesnay that had previously appeared only in confidential journals. Revised and completed by Dupont de Nemours, these articles are here for the first time accessible to a wider public. Illustrated with a copper-engraved frontispiece by Ozanne after Jeaurat; woodcut vignette to the title. A large-margined copy. Old signature at the corner of the title, with slight transfer to the margin of the frontispiece. (INED 1618; Kress 6548; En français dans le texte 163).
