[RACINE (Louis). La Religion, poem. In Paris, at J.B. Coignard and J. Desaint, 1742. In-8, XVI-206 p., [1] f., contemporary glazed havana calf, spine with 5 nerves, decorated caissons, garnet morocco title-piece, triple gilt fillet on the boards, red edges (head-cap uncovered, 2 corners worn; some browning and dust marks). First edition decorated with a vignette engraved on the title by C.N. Cochin. This copy contains, inserted at the end : - VOLTAIRE]. Advice to Mr. Racine on his poem De la religion, by an amateur of Belles-Lettres. S.l., s.n., [1742], 14 p. (Bengesco 1585). This "advice" is in fact a full-scale criticism of Racine's poem. Provenance: Cardinal Louis-Ernest Dubois, 1856-1929, archbishop of Bourges, Rouen and then Paris (engraved bookplate); Archevêché de Paris (label).
