WITHDRAWAL FROM SALE /// * COURAUD (Elijah). The Christian hero or funeral speech on the subject of the death of Messire Henry Chabot, Duke of Rohan & de Frontenay, Peer of France, Knight of the King's Orders, Prince of Leon, Count of Porhoüet & de S. Aulaye, Marquis de Belin, &c. Governor of the Province & Duchy of Anjou. Pronounced in the great church of Sainct Maurice d'Angers, the Mardy of the Holy Week in Angers, at Pierre Avril's, 1655. In-4, 23 p., 19th c. red half-sadness, spine with 4 nerves, gilt title (slightly browned spine, insolated plates, freckles). Illustrated with Chabot's arms woodcut full page, on the back of the title; and a vignette at the title. Provenance: Jacques Quétif (1618-1698, ex-libris manuscrit au titre): French Dominican religious, historian and bibliographer of his order. He entered the Dominican Order at the age of 17 and studied philosophy in Paris and theology in Bordeaux. In 1652, he became librarian of the Dominican convent in the rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. He maintained relations with Chancellor Séguier, who entrusted him with his library and the choice of his books. He is widely consulted as an expert in canon law. His knowledge and facility in writing Latin made him appointed by his superiors to write the history of the Order. Unfinished at the time of his death, his work was later completed by Jacques Échard, who published it under the title Scriptores ordinis praedicatorum recensiti notis historicis et criticis illustrati auctoribus in 1719-21. Provenance: Label ex-libris Bibliothèque du Comte de F. de Rohan-Chabot and dry seal Rohan-Chabot (monogrammed RC crowned) on cover page.
