FABRIZI d'ACQUAPENDENTE (Girolamo). Tractatus anatomicus tri - Lot 163
FABRIZI d'ACQUAPENDENTE (Girolamo). Tractatus anatomicus triplex. De Oculo De Aure De Laringe organo magno labore ac studio Hieronimi Fabricy. S.l., per I. Th. de Bry denuo publicatus, 1613. In folio, [4] f. (whose title is engraved), 163 p., [5] f., fig., [sign. 4] f. then A-X 4, Y 3], old vellum, smooth spine, title in ink (headcap snag, laces absent, title burnished; without the last f Y4 white). First edition in Latin, which allowed a wide European diffusion of this treatise, which had first appeared in Italian (De vision, de voce, de auditu; Venice, Bolzetta, 1600). Girolamo Fabrizi d'Aquapendente (1537-1619), also known as Fabricius, taught anatomy and practised dissections in Padua. Considered to be the father of embryology, he allowed various advances in the field of surgery; William Harvey was one of his pupils. The illustration consists of 11 plates showing numerous figures, engraved on copper and included in the paginations (i.e. pp. 17, 19, 21, 23, 95, 97, 99, 101, 103, 105, and 147), and 25 woodcut figures in the text. The copy has been rebound in its original binding, which was to contain an additional book with the title on the spine. Old signature under title N. Franchimont. (USTC 2137182; VD17 3:623573L).
