JAPON : Triptyque par YOSHITOSHI - Lot 130
JAPON : Triptyque par YOSHITOSHI JAPAN: Triptych by YOSHITOSHI, entitled "Taira no Kiyomori Hi no Yamai no zu" (The Flaming Fever of Taira no Kiyomori). Artist's signature YOSHITOSHI ga (drawn by) on the left board, followed by his Taisô seal. Engraved by Yamamoto, resident of Shiba Sakuragawa. Published by Akiyama Buemon in August 1883. Superb proof (both the print run, the colours and the condition), all the images whole (uncropped as the triptychs are too often), embossing very present. Kiyomori, the most illustrious member of the Taïra family, responsible for numerous plots, assassinations - including in the family of his early allies -, ruthlessly suppressed revolts, and the two famous Hogen and Heïji wars, became, in spite of his successes, very ill and prey to numerous hallucinations: appearances of skulls in the garden of his Palace in Settsu where he had retired. Notes: A similar copy at the MFA (Museum of Fine Art) Boston, under no. 11.21634-6 (Ex collection William Sturgis Bigelow) Vertical Ôban Triptych by YOSHITOSHI (1839-1892), entitled "Taira no Kiyomori Hi no Yamai no zu" (the ardent fever of Taira no Kiyomori). Engraved by Yamamoto living in Shiba Sakuragawa. Edited by Akiyama Buemon in August 1883. Superb colors, condition and impression. Full images, unbacked.
