Two vignettes: Socrates drinking the hemlock and Tiresias slandered.
Pen and black ink, brown wash on black pencil strokes.
13.8×9 cm each.
On the back of the frame, an engraving with the caption "I consent to be blind, I will not see men" depicting the scene in the opposite direction of our drawing.
Our two illustrations were carried out and engraved for the book "Traité de la morale pour l'espèce humaine", of Jean Baptiste Delisle de Sales, whose first edition appeared in 1770; one is reproduced volume 6 p.125 captioned "Crois-tu-tu que j'aurai quelque courage, si Dieu ne me regardait pas" and the other volume IV, p.25 "je consens à être aveugle, je ne voisai pas les hommes".
