(epitaph, table), p.[9]-16 (notice to the binder), [1] f. blank, contemporary red morocco, smooth spine decorated with a set of large gilt irons, including lyre and doves at the head, title and date gilt in medallions, gilt tomato, large gilt decoration on the boards, composed of fillets, scrolls and fleurons, gilt stippling at the edges, inner scroll, blue moiré satin endpapers, edges gilt, restorations (russeting and brown spots) Famous edition of the Fermiers généraux, who commissioned it; one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 18th century, and the masterpiece of Eisen. One of the so-called "de présent" copies, with a morocco binding whose decoration was specially designed by Gravelot, a rare and sought-after condition. The illustration includes 2 portraits, that of La Fontaine after Hyacinthe Rigaud, and that of Eisen after Vispré, both etched by Ficquet, and 80 figures by Eisen, etched by Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse, Flipart, Lemire, Leveau, Longueil and Ouvrier, 4 vignettes and 53 culs-de-lampe after Pierre Ph. Several figures are uncovered; the figure of "Comment l'esprit vient aux filles" (t.2 p. 125) is in two states. Provenance: Ripault (sold 1924; bookplate with his motto d'espérer servira); engraved bookplate monogrammed J W or T W framed by an eagle and a dog and surmounted by a caduceus. (Cohen, 558-570).
