MOLIÈRE. The works of Monsieur de Molière.... - Lot 90 - Kâ-Mondo
MOLIÈRE. The works of Monsieur de Molière. Revealed, corrected & increased. Enriched with intaglio figures. In Paris, at D. Thierry, C. Barbin and P. Trabouillet, 1682. 8 vols. in-12, contemporary black morocco, spine with 5 nerves, title and gilt morocco, gilt numeral and gilt fillet on each box, cold fillet bordering the boards, gilt arms in the centre, gilt roulette on the cuts and edges of the back covers, gilt edges on marbling, old restorations (3 uncovered headpieces, corners rubbed, shock on a cut in t.1browning). First complete collective edition of Molière's works, including six plays in original editions: Don Garcie de Navarre, l'Impromptu de Versailles, Don Juan ou le Festin de Pierre, Melicerte, Les Amours magnifiques and la Comtesse d'Escarbagnas. It was established by the actors Vinot and La Grange, according to the manuscripts of Molière. It is also the first illustrated edition, decorated with 30 figures engraved by J. Sauvé after Brissart; most of them are not signed. These engravings offer a precious testimony on the costumes and the staging of the period. An exceptional copy, bound in contemporary black morocco, with the arms and cipher of Louis-César de Crémeaux d'Entragues, lieutenant general in the government of Mâconnais, who died in 1747. He had gathered a considerable library, composed of works related to the history of his time as well as various literary works. Copies bound in antique morocco are rare: this one is the only one known in a binding with arms. Provenance: Louis-César de Crémeaux, marquis d'Entragues (arms on the boards, figures on the spine; engraved bookplate of a family predecessor, with engraved name); Ripault (sale January 1924, lot 219; armorial bookplate with the motto, "D'espérer servira"). (Tchémerzine IV, 827, conforming collation, Ripault copy cited; O.H.R. pl. 570, copy cited).
