In-12, VIII-279 p., red morocco, spine with 5 nerves decorated with a gilt stippling, gilt author and title, triple gilt fillet bordering the boards, double gilt fillet at the edges, inner lace, gilt edges, monogram JE chased on the side edge [Capé] superf. rubs at the head of the jaws, on the tail cap and the corners, one of the water a little crushed) First edition of "one of the most esteemed works of the Goncourt brothers" (Carteret). One of the 7 first copies on Hollande paper, the only large paper. Personal copy of the authors, Jules and Edmond de Goncourt, with their initials engraved on the edge. It bears their engraved bookplate, above which is an autograph note from Edmond: "Our copy. One of the five (five crossed out) copies of the first edition printed on Hollande paper. (7 copies). Edmond de Goncourt". Provenance: this copy is mentioned twice by Carteret, in the Goncourt sale of 1897 (an old flyleaf attached to the copy refers to it), and in the Parran sale of 1921 (n°359).
