HUGO (Victor). Set of six works. 1. Complete works Poetry. IV. The autumn leaves. Paris, Eugène Renduel, 1834. In-8, 320 p., contemporary aubergine glazed calf, spine with 4 nerves, decorated with a triple gilt fillet, gilt author and title, gilt fleurons, boards bordered with a double frame of roulettes, one cold, the other gilt, a double gilt fillet, large romantic medallion in the centre, gilt roulette on the edges of the spine and the edges of the back covers, gilt edges (snags on the headpieces, corners rubbed, scattered brownings). New edition. Romantic binding attributable to Ginain. A few handwritten lines have been scratched from the title page, only the date of August 4, 1836 remains legible. Provenance: Armand Ripault (1st sale 1924 n°185; armorial bookplate with his motto "D'espérer servira"). 2. Complete works Poetry. VII. Les rayons et les ombres. Paris, Delloye, 1840. In-8, [2] f., XIII-389 p., ivory percaline à la Bradel, red basane title-piece, black fleuron, gilt date, untrimmed [Pierson] (spine and edge of boards browned, head-cap rubbed). First edition of this "rare and sought-after work" (Carteret I, 412; mentions a last blank page not preserved in this copy). 3. Les Orientales, fifth edition. Volume III. Paris, Gosselin, 1829. In-8, brown glazed calf with cold-stamped decoration, smooth spine decorated, gilt head [Martin] (worn binding with gaps). First edition with a new title, to follow the original two-volume in-8 edition of the Odes et ballades. The binding is contemporary with the publication. Provenance: Ripault (1st sale 1924 n°184; armorial bookplate with his motto "D'espérer servira"). 4. Works Dramas. V. Lucrèce Borgia. Paris, Eugène Renduel, 1833. In-8, XI-192 p., 8 p. (catalogue), front cover, half red morocco with long-grained corners, smooth spine with false nerves, gilt head, cover and spine preserved, untrimmed [Petitot] (one corner dulled, moderate rubbing to the spines, corners and headpieces, brown spots). Edition illustrated with an etched frontispiece by Célestin Nanteuil, printed on Chine collé. Collation conforms to the original edition described by Carteret (I, 404); only the cover bears the mention of a second edition. Autograph letter from Victor Hugo, signed with his initials, "to my excellent friend Bésanger". 5. OEuvres Dramas. VII. Angelo, tyrant of Padua. Paris, Eugène Renduel, 1835. In-8, [2] f., VII-184 p., 8 p. (catalogue), white vellum, smooth spine, brown basane title page, covers preserved, untrimmed [Pierson] (title page rubbed). First edition of which no large papers were printed. "Rare and sought-after drama" (Carteret I, 407). 6. OEuvres complètes Dramas. Volume seven. Ruy Blas. Paris, H. Delloye; Leipzig, Brockhaus and Avenarius, 1838. In-8, XXI-250 p., [1] f. (table), brick half-percaline à la Bradel, black basane title-piece (head-cap and corners dulled). First edition. Copy enriched with an autograph letter signed by Victor Hugo, dated 15 October [1841], 1 page in-8, addressed to the journalist and playwright Victor Herbin (1804-1868), where he indicates in particular: "I learned from a newspaper that I was doing a vaudeville, and I learned from another newspaper that it was nothing of the kind. I agree with the latter". Enriched with a press clipping pasted to the v° of the title, listing the actors performing Ruy Blas, a poster of the Théâtre de l'Odéon for the same play, and a large press clipping in 2 sheets, an article by Auguste Vitu about the revival of Ruy Blas. Copy cited by Carteret (I, 408), originally that of Charles Asselineau (bookplate), then of Parran (sale 1921 n°422). That is 6 volumes.
