JAPAN. Oval iron tsuba, with stylized radiating engraved and chiseled decoration, openwork in positive, in a first "inner circle"; of wild geese "Karigane", between two pairs of myôga facing each other, at the top and bottom of the guard. The inner circle and inner edge of the crenellated mimi, probably forming a stylized wave pattern. Two Hitsuana. Edo period, 19th century, probably Akasaka school. 7.5 × 7.2 cm. Unsigned. The wild goose is a symbol of light, of the "male" principle; Yang, and of fidelity in Japanese marriages.
