JAPAN. Oval openwork iron tsuba in positive, engraved and chiseled in low relief, small highlights in gilded copper inlays, decorated with two carps gushing out of the water. Two Hitsuana. 19th century, Choshu school. 7.3 × 6.8 cm. Unsigned. (Slight wear). The carp is a symbol of perseverance, endurance and longevity, often used in festivals such as the boys' festival on May 5.
