JAPAN. Oval iron tsuba, engraved and chiseled in low relief, and openwork, of a motif of kiku flowers and its foliage. Beautiful gold damascene of a geometrical pattern on the mimi (wear). Edo period, 19th century. Probably one of the Shoami school. Two hitsuana. 7.2 × 6.9 cm. This chrysanthemum flower is "the rose" in Japan as well as in China where it is called "Women's Flower"; or "Feminine Perfection"; or "Essence of the Sun"; or the "Golden Heart"; symbol reserved for the Imperial Family in the Land of the Rising Sun.
