In-4, green morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, author, title, place and date gilt, original copper inset and gilt text on upper cover, spine flaps edged and lined with satin with printed decoration, double endpapers of printed satin and marbled paper, illustrated parchment covers preserved, gilt edges on witnesses, case [René Kieffer].
Illustrated with color etchings at the head of each chapter, and woodcuts drawn and engraved in black, red or green by Georges Bruyer.
Limited edition of 250 copies: one of the top 20 on vellum or japon, this one no. 9 on vellum, including three states of the etchings including the pure etching, a separate print of the woodcuts on japon pelure (mounted on strong paper), and an original full-page watercolor signed by the artist on the frontispiece, and titled in pencil: "De l'inconstance d'Ysabeau. Souvent ma plume à la louer s'attache...Mais à cela je ne veux plus toucher".
Very handsome binding by Kieffer, adorned on the upper board with an inserted copperplate, signed by G. Bruyer, titled in gold "De la mort de Monsieur de Chiffay", with the text in 10 gilt verses below; the morocco-edged paste-downs adorned with gilt fillet and stippling are lined with two original engravings by Bruter, set against a background of a seeded salamander, printed on cream satin.
