In-8, LXIX-[2]-372-[3] pp. portrait, engraved title, 10 plates, forest-green morocco, 5-ribbed spine, gilt author, title, place and date, gilt decorated boxes with floral basket, butterflies, horns of plenty and scrolls in a double framing of gilt fillet, gilt stippling, triple gilt fillet framing to the boards, double gilt fillet to the edges, gilt edges, gilt lace, printed cover on parchment preserved, lined case [Pagnant] (epidermures to the case). Preface by Alexandre Dumas fils. Galaup de Chasteuil's collection of all the masterpieces of the human mind. Portrait of Alexandre Dumas fils by Jules Jacquemard after Carpeaux's etched bust; 11 etchings drawn and engraved by Léopold Flameng; woodcut text ornaments and frontispiece by Emile Reiber. Limited edition of 333 copies, all with proofs before the letter: one of 200 on van Gelder paper (no. 13). Our copy is signed in justification by the publishers and was nominative (scratched). It is enriched by autograph documents and engraved suites from other illustrated editions published in the 1870s: - autograph letter signed by Alexandre Dumas fils, placed opposite his portrait, written in ink on headed paper from his address at 98 avenue de Villiers (Paris); - autograph letter signed by illustrator Edmond Hédouin, dated July 18 [18]83, in black ink. In-12 filled, 4. f., black ink on blue paper, pasted on white f. ; - The suite of 6 etchings (including Prévost's portrait) by the same HÉDOUIN for the edition of Manon Lescaut by Houssaye (Paris, Librairie des bibliophiles, 1874), in 2 or 3 states, including the portrait; one of the two states of the portrait is enriched with a signed dispatch from the artist in pencil ("à Jules Grenier") ; - The suite of 9 etchings (including the portrait) by Louis MONZIÈS for the edition prefaced by Anatole France (Paris, Lemerre, 1878); - The suite of 3 etchings (including the portrait) by Adolphe LALAUZE and the facsimile of Prévost's letter for the edition prefaced by Lescure (Paris, Quantin, 1879). In addition, the copy includes 1 portrait of Prevost by Ficquet after F. Schmidt and 1 engraving, unsigned. (Vicaire VI, 818-819).
