[DORÉ]. RABELAIS (François). Oeuvres de Rabelais, text collated from the original editions with a life of the author, notes and glossary, illustrations by Gustave Doré. Paris, Garnier Frères, 1873, in-folio, 2 volumes, (4) , XLIV , 476 (4) , 496 pp. 60 plates and a portrait, Cherry half-chagrin with corners, spine ribbed, gilt heads. Modern binding. (light spotting in volume 2). First edition. The illustration consists of 29 plates in Volume I and 31 in Volume II, as well as numerous woodcut illustrations forming chapter headings and cul-de-lampe. Gustave Doré, who illustrated Bry's Rabelais in 1854, has reworked his curious and fantastic evocation of the Middle Ages in a larger format.
