ALBINUS (Bernhard Siegfried). Tables of the... - Lot 1 - Kâ-Mondo
ALBINUS (Bernhard Siegfried). Tables of the skeleton and muscles of the human body. Edinburgh, printed for Andrew Bell engraver, 1777-1778. Two parts in one in-folio volume, [1] f. (title), IV-32 p., 26 pl. ; [1] f. (title), p. [31]-86, 15 pl., old marbled havana half-basin, 7-rib spine, trace of title-piece (spine epid., corners dull; qq. foxing and transfer of figures, qq. highlighting in red pencil).
Third edition, and second edition in English, of this famous compendium, as spectacular as it is scientifically accurate. The plates have been reengraved for the occasion, reduced in size and stripped of the ornamentation of previous editions, thus emphasizing the technical aspect of the subject.
The work contains 41 plates engraved by Andrew Bell, broken down as follows: in the first part, numbered I to III + I to X, they are duplicates, since the skeleton is first presented drawn with details and shading of the skeleton and tissues, then simplified by a line to be captioned; in the second part, numbered XI to XXV, they are both shaded and captioned.
Large copper-engraved title vignette repeated.
An interesting copy, the entire second part of which is enriched by numerous handwritten comments in French, probably written in the 19th c. (on "Henry" watermarked laid paper) on several leaves mounted on tabs to allow access to the original text.
Early handwritten annotations on one endpaper, about the author; small figure drawn in ink at the edge of pl.XI 2nd part.
Provenance: Georges François Symon de Carneville (1750-1837), military officer of Norman origin (handwritten bookplate on one endpaper); Dr. François Moutier (20th c. engraved bookplate).
(Garrison & Morton 399; Waller 339; Wellcome II, 26).
