DESMARETS DE SAINT-SORLIN (Jean). [Clovis, ou la France chrestienne, poème héroïque. A Paris, chez A. Courbé et H. Le Gras, 1657]. In-4, [16] (of 17) f., 464 p., [1] blank f., fr., pl., antique speckled parchment, 5-nerved spine, fawn title page, red edges (upper guard missing, without letterpressed title page, small damage to corner of 1st front, 2nd doubled, some minor browning and soiling, worm spots in margins at beginning of vol. then p.237 to 263, lacks plate of Canto 24; most plate ornaments slightly cut by binder). First edition of this work, renowned for the quality of its copper-engraved hors-texte illustration, comprising a frontispiece by N. Pitau after Charles Le Brun, an unsigned equestrian portrait of Louis XIV jeune engraved by Jean Couvay after Bourdon, a copper-engraved crowned figure plate, and 26 unsigned plates, 22 of which engraved by François Chauveau and 4 by Abraham Bosse. Each plate is composed of a central vignette and figures above and below, forming a compositional style that was completely innovative for its time, giving this work a remarkable place in the history of 17th-century illustrated books. (Brunet II, 633).
