GEMELLI-CARERI (Giovanni-Francesco). Voyage autour du monde. - Lot 94
GEMELLI-CARERI (Giovanni-Francesco). Voyage autour du monde. Translated from the Italian... by M. L. N. [Le Noble]. A Paris, chez E. Ganeau, 1727. 6 vol. in-12, contemporary mottled havana calf, 5-rib spine, ornate caissons, garnet-toned title and greezes, marbled boards (defects including blunted corners, worn headpieces and 2 grossly repaired headpieces; ordinary browning, last plate of vol. 2 torn without missing over qq. cm.). Important account of a 17th-century voyage, whose authenticity was questioned, as it often was, until Baron de Humboldt asserted that the descriptions of Mexico and Acapulco could only be the work of a real eyewitness. New edition of this first French translation, originally published in 1719. The illustration, entirely engraved on copperplate, consists of a frontispiece, a portrait and 63 plates, including 9 fold-outs. Sabin reports 60 plates without mentioning the frontispiece and portrait. I. Of Turkey: Frontispiece, portrait of the author, 4 plates, 1 of which folding; II. Persia: 5 plates, including 2 fold-outs; III. Indostan, 26 plates, 1 folding; IV. Of China 8 pl. including 2 fold-outs; V. Isles of the Philippines, 2 plates; VI. De la Nouvelle Espagne, 18 pl. dont 3 dépliants. (Sabin 26851).
