In-4, front, [7] f., 371 p., [2] f., contemporary brown basane, 5-nerved spine, greant title-piece, ornate caissons, red edges (binding rubbed, spine warped, corners dull; wetness in margins of 1st f. including front, ordinary browning). First French translation by physician, grammarian and linguist Thomas Lagrue (1620-1680) of this curious work describing the religious doctrines, ceremonies and penitential rites of the peoples of the Coromandel coast. The volume ends with Barthrovherri's Proverbs on the Way to Heaven and Reasonable Conduct, as well as an extract from La Chine illustrée by Athanase Kircher. The copper-engraved illustration consists of a frontispiece and 7 mid-page vignettes. Without the folding plate.
