(title), 399 p., front, figs, plates, contemporary marbled havana calf, 5-ribbed spine, ornate coffered panels, garnet-red title page, cold fillet around covers, gilt fillet around edges, red edges (2 corners rubbed, lower jaw split at head; last 2 f. browned, sporadic wetness in margins of sections D and E). First edition of this work, which helped spread Newton's thought in France. Voltaire dedicated it to his friend, the Marquise Émilie Du Châtelet, who took part in its writing. The illustration, entirely engraved on copper, includes a frontispiece after Dubourg, and a portrait of Voltaire, engraved by Folkema, a title vignette by Duflos after Debrie, 25 headpieces and 25 culs-de-lampe, and technical figures represented on 6 plates and over 50 vignettes in the text, as well as a folding table (Cohen 1037-1038; Bengesco 1570).
