[VAN MAËLE (Maurice François Alfred Martin, known as Martin) - Lot 317
[VAN MAËLE (Maurice François Alfred Martin, known as Martin). Lead arrows. Suite of ten etchings dedicated to Madame la comtesse Dorothée de S... by her most humble and obedient servant. S.l., s.n., [1911]. In-4, contemporary Bradel-style red polished half-chagrin with corners, spine framed with gilt scroll and title, cold-stamped fillets on boards, mounted on mitered boards (corners and edges a little rubbed, browning). Very rare suite of 11 free etchings by Martin Van Maële (a title-frontispiece and 10 plates), printed on Arches laid paper. An exceptional copy, with 11 original graphite sketches mounted on strong card. The collection is a veritable manifesto against the Romantic vision of love, and could be entitled "Comment se venger de Cupidon" ("How to get even with Cupid"): the little creature is subjected to the worst humiliations in very free scenes. Size of drawings: H. between 19.3 and 15.9 x W. between 11.4 and 13.6 cm.
