BEAURIN, Jean de. Histoire de la campagne de M. le Prince de - Lot 22
BEAURIN, Jean de. Histoire de la campagne de M. le Prince de Condé, en Flandre en 1674. Published in Paris by the author and Charles-Antoine Jombert, Delaguette and Monory, in 1774. In-folio format (425 x 270 mm), on sheets in a folder. 5 ff.n.ch. (false title, engraved frontispiece, title and list of subscribers), XIV, 63 and 216 pages, 3 ff.n.ch. (errata, approbation and one blank leaf). Faded leaves, wetness, wormholes on most text leaves, a few tears to plans and maps (Haut and Bas-Rhin, Holland, Catholic Netherlands, Château de Navagne, plan de Grave and plan n°3). First edition of this account of the Flanders campaign by the Prince de Condé, given for its centenary. The story, written by Chevalier de Beaurain, is lavishly illustrated: a title-frontispiece engraved by L. Patas after Claude-Louis Desrais, a bust of Louis XV surmounting a globe engraved by Patas after Favane with the motto "In medio mihi Caesar erit templumque tenebit" ("In the middle will be Caesar, he will occupy the temple"), an equestrian portrait of the Grand Condé, with the motto "Feliciter Audax", by Moette after Godefroy, 20 vignettes and culs-de-lampe by Desrais and Nerbelin, 4 folded maps (Hollande, Haut et Bas-Rhin, Pays-Bas Catholique and Franche-Comté), a double view of Château d'Argenteau, a view of Château de Navagne and 34 double-page maps of camps and battles, including 2 fold-outs: 19th, bis and 19th, bis2. These maps of camps and battles have also been enhanced by hand to better indicate the position of the belligerents. [Cohen, 51]. A profusely illustrated copy which, despite some imperfections, is nevertheless pleasant to look at and handle.
