Publisher's full beige cloth boards, long title on smooth spine, rich gold embellished decoration on front cover. Contemporary binding. 86 pages, 1 portrait-frontispiece of Handel, several hors-texte plates on strong paper, a handwritten score reproduced in facsimile on a fold-out plate, several B&W illustrations in the text, including portraits, sculptures, reproductions of works, scores and facsimiles. Bandeaux, lettrines and culs-de-lampe. Text in German. Covers and corners rubbed, slight browning on boards. First edition, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Handel, of the second volume in the series of biographies of famous musicians by German composer, conductor and musicologist Fritz Volbach (1861-1940). This richly illustrated work depicts the life and personality of the composer Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759), providing a good introduction to his work. Autograph letter from the author to the poet Charles Guérin (1873-1907) on the title. A good copy in beautifully decorated publisher's boards.
