In the 1640s, on the eve of the fall of the Ming dynasty, Feng Menglong, a publisher in the city of Sushou, had the idea of compiling an anthology of forty tales drawn from various successful collections, some of them very old. This anthology of piquant, edifying and often gallant stories describes the life of society at the time, its customs and superstitions.
