[ANTIPHONARY]. The Office of Holy Week, revised once again by order of the King, in accordance with the Breviary and Missal of His Holiness Pope Urban VIII. A superb 17th-century edition published by Antoine Ruette, adorned with a beautiful allegorical frontispiece and three full-page engraved plates, enriched with 23 double-sided plates of Gregorian chants in black and red. In-12 (115x175 mm), full brown speckled calfskin, smooth spine adorned with compartmentalized fleurons and the title gilded on an ochre leather patch, gilded fillet on the edges, red speckled edges (contemporary binding). 462 pages plus 1 folio of privliège, 1 engraved frontispiece, and 3 full-page engraved plates, with initials and tailpieces. Printed in black and red. Text in French and Latin. The spine is completely split on the front cover and partially split on the back cover; the cap bands are missing; there are losses at the bottom of the spine, along the edges, and in the corners; water stains on the lower part of the text pages, showing through starting on page 100, a handwritten annotation from the period at the top of the first text page. A charming edition produced by Antoine Ruette (1609–1669), bookbinder to King Louis XIV, printed in black and red and adorned with a beautiful, unsigned intaglio-engraved frontispiece depicting Louis XIV on his knees, entrusting the crown and scepter to the Blessed Virgin and Christ, as well as three full-page engraved plates depicting the Crucifixion and the Last Supper, and lovely initials and tailpieces. A precious copy enriched with 23 double-sided sheets of Gregorian musical scores bound into the body of the book.
