[LANDES] - Lot 18
[LANDES] ARNAUDIN (Félix). In the Days of Stilts. Paris, Rouget, 1928. Foreword by Joseph de Pesqudoux. Preface by André POUDENX. 97 phototypes based on photographs by Félix Arnaudin. Oblong quarto: 2f. (frontispiece by Léon Fauret). Phototypes protected by labeled serpentine strips. 310 copies were printed by subscription; this is no. (79/310). Stapled copy preserved in its burgundy half-shagreen slipcase, smooth spine, gilt title. Two-tone publisher’s cover. (Spine heavily faded, missing sections, significant foxing throughout the book, minor tears of no consequence). One of the iconic works on the Landes region, highly sought after, comprising several sections (Sacred Stones and Fountains; Chapels and Churches; Castles and Rustic Houses; Neighborhoods and Villages—The Old Trees of the Old Landes—Field and Farm Work in the Landes of Yesteryear—Life at the “Segue”—Landes Horizons—Lagoons—Bordes and Parks—Pastoral Life - Hunting and Fishing in the Landes of Our Forefathers - Beekeeping in the Old Landes - Mills, Streams, Runs, and Ponds - Scenes from the Past - Games and Gatherings). Interesting photographs by the renowned Félix Arnaudin—linguist, folklorist, historian, ethnologist, photographer, and writer—who was one of the first to preserve the Haute-Lande. His body of work consists of collections of tales, proverbs, songs, words from the Gascon language, notes on history, archaeology, and ecology, as well as photographs (now rare and highly sought-after) of landscapes, dwellings, shepherds, and farmers of the Landes region. His birthplace is now a venue for photography exhibitions managed by the municipality of Labouheyre. He is also notably credited with compiling the dictionary of the Gascon dialect of the Grande-Lande. Enclosed: another framed frontispiece from the book. (Significant foxing).
