Large 8vo, white publisher’s cardboard binding with a portrait of the author on the front cover, illustrated color dust jacket with a window revealing the portrait. Unpaginated (29 ff.), 2 out-of-text illustrations. Spine of the dust jacket discolored, as is often the case. First bilingual edition of this collection by André Breton, who was then in exile in New York. It is adorned with a playful Dada-inspired dust jacket designed by Marcel Duchamp: Breton’s portrait illuminating the world. This edition also contains two black-and-white illustrations by Arshile Gorky (1904–1948), an Armenian painter who became a naturalized American citizen, English translation by Edouard Roditi.
