[ART BOOK] RAETZ, Markus. Mirror. - Lot 204
[ART BOOK] RAETZ, Markus. Mirror.
No place, M. R., 1986; 2003 edition.
A relief medallion on aluminum, engraved on the reverse with “MR 15/26,” to which is attached—on a small cardboard slip wrapped in fishing line—a handwritten text in German and French. The object is presented in a thick cardboard box in in-4 format with cutouts and blue felt lining, containing the certificate of authenticity and the title handwritten in black ink, with a black fabric spine and a black fabric drawstring closure.
This medallion depicting a woman’s bust is based on a detail from Paul Delvaux’s surrealist painting, “L’Aurore” (1937).
Markus Raetz (1941–2020), a contemporary Swiss artist, built his body of work around perception, distortion, form, the mirror, and the gaze of the other. As evidenced by this medallion, whose humorous little caption reads: “Hang the relief from the ceiling using the string so that it swings freely at eye level. To clean, use a non-abrasive cleaner specifically designed for aluminum.”
