Bianca's Birthday at Studio 54.
Bianca Jagger riding a white horse at Studio 54 on her 30th birthday has become an icon
of the New York club scene.
It was taken under very confusing, hurried circumstances in May, 1977 around 2 a.m.
A whirling crowd of fantastically dressed club kids, gay and straight, high society, and the fashion pack (Halston, Baryshnikov, Mick Jagger among them) were dancing to the unforgettable, pulsating beat of Nile Rogers' "Le Freak." I started dancing with my companion, a young, handsome Latin actor.
Suddenly Bianca, attired in a slinky, red, off-the shoulder Halston jersey dress, mounted a white horse brought to the party for her by club owner Steve Rubell, while masses of white balloons were dropped from the ceiling. It was a stunning, completely astonishing, and now legendary, moment. I ran to one of the big speakers, grabbed the camera I had hidden behind it, and took one, two, three pictures. And that was it!
The next day that picture flashed round the tabloid world and Studio 54 entered the pantheon of the most famous clubs in the world. Since then, I've photographed Bianca on many occasions, but times have changed and she has changed, too. She is now very involved in political and humanitarian causes and doesn't like to talk about those days, leaving behind a well-documented and fabled past.
