[SAXON LUDOLF. The first [-second] volume... - Lot 186 - Kâ-Mondo
[SAXON LUDOLF. The first [-second] volume of the grant Vita Christi... in French. Paris, Bossozel, circa 1534 [?] ]. In-folio, LXXII-[2]-CXXI f., [sign. a2-8, b-p8, q4 (out of 8?), aa-pp8, qq1 (out of 8)], fig.., contemporary Havana calf, modern Basane spine, with 6 nerves and dumb, cold-flour fleurons, dishes bordered with a set of gilt fillets, gilt angular fleurons, gilt medallion in the centre of each dish (spine faded, bits and caps rubbed, corners restored; rare browning and stains in margin without gravity, repair in margin f. h8, a mq. corner in margin f. gg2; the title is missing, the introductory leaves, 7 f. at the end, and the 2nd part). Edition assumed from the translator's indication: Guillaume Lemenand, OFM, also author of the prologue; also from the invoice and the collation. Gothic edition with 53 lines on 2 columns; woodcut illustrations and initials. Although incomplete, this volume contains more than 40 engraved vignettes (some repeated). Interesting provenance: Royal Abbey of Longchamp, founded in 1255 by Isabelle de France, sister of Saint Louis, in the parish of Auteuil, and destroyed during the Revolution. A lack of respect for the rule characterized this establishment from the 16th century, and even in the 18th century, Diderot was inspired by this dissolute atmosphere to compose La Religieuse. The name of the abbey is stamped on the lower plate, accompanied by the dates 1560 and 1569. On the upper plate is the name of a sister, Jehanne de Mailly, and the date 1560. Several abbesses of this family ran the establishment in the 16th century. Modern ex-libris label Count Chandon de Briailles. (BP16, 107610).
