[Sixteenth-century book]. BOCCACE. Ameto... - Lot 13 - Kâ-Mondo
[Sixteenth-century book]. BOCCACE. Ameto over comedia delle nimphe fiorentine [In colophon] Venetia, per Nicolo Zopino e Vicentio Compagno, 1524. In-8, 95 f. (signed A-L 8, M 7 (of 8)), 18th century marbled tan calf, 5-ribbed spine, garnet-red basane title-piece, ornamented boards, red edges (tail cap torn off with worm tract, head cap uncovered, 3 corners dull, epidermis; worm tract at the edge of the title, touching some letters on the following 2 ff., generally marginal russeting, lacking the last blank leaf). One of the first separate editions of this allegorical and pastoral comedy by Boccaccio, based on the text published by Giunta in 1521. Ameto, a young wanderer, meets a group of nymphs who help turn this wild man into a true man; it is an allegory of the civilizing power of love. Composed in 1341-42 and first published in 1478, this work is often considered a precursor to the Decameron. Title in an ornamental frame, initial at the head of the text, vignette with the image of St. Nicholas on the v° of the last leaf, all woodcut. (USTC 814742; CNCE 6220).
