[16th century book]. EURIPIDES. Euripidis... - Lot 43 - Kâ-Mondo
[16th century book]. EURIPIDES. Euripidis tragoediae octodecim [preceded by the title in Greek]. [Volume 1]. Basileae, apud I. Hervagium, 1537. In-8, unpaginated, [sign. [alpha] 6 (of 8), aa-hh 8, ii6 (of 8)], contemporary sow-skin binding on wooden ais, spine with 3 nerves and mutes, cold-ornamented boxes, boards decorated with a composition of cold plates, with on the upper board the muses Thalia and Euterpe in small vignettes, as well as the initials A. V. G. and the date 1541, Apollo in particular on the lower board, and both boards bordered in the same way, with vignettes of Christian history (crucifixion, resurrection, original sin, all in cold, clasps (one clasp incomplete, one corner dulled, snagged on tail cover, upper guard missing, very light spotting at beginning of vol., more sustained but light at end of vol., one corner missing in margin f. i3). Rare second edition of the known tragedies of Euripides, in Greek, which only preceded the princeps edition published by Aldus in 1503. Volume 1 only (of 2). The two blank leaves between the introductory pages and the text [alpha 7 and 8] are missing as usual, as well as two other blank leaves at the end, but the two leaves of the last quire containing the colophon and the printer's mark are present. A wide-margined copy. Provenance: Adolf von Glauburg (1524-1555), jurist and humanist, legal adviser and later alderman of Frankfurt am Main. His initials appear on the upper cover of the binding. He was a friend of the arts and an enlightened man of his time, and owned an extensive library (cf. Hermann Traut, Dr. Adolf Glauburg und seine Bibliothek, Frankfurt am Main, 1920). A handwritten note on the title tells us that the book passed to Johann Adolph von Glauburg, patrician of Frankfurt (1556-1611), and finally to Jacob Marquard von Glauburg, who was probably the author of the note. The Deutsche Biographie does not provide any biographical information on the latter, but it is known that he also owned medieval manuscripts, some of which are still preserved in Meiningen.
