VOLTAIRE. complete works. [Kehl], Imprimerie de la Société Littéraire Typographique, 1784-1789. 70 vols. With : Supplément au recueil des lettres de M. de Voltaire. In Paris, by Xhrouet, Déterville, Petit, 1808. 72 vol. in-8 in uniform binding, period green speckled basane, smooth spine, frieze, red title-pieces and tomaison, gilt fleurons urns and lyres, gilt roulette, gilt edges (defects of use to the bindings, including rubbed jaws, a few broken headpieces, a few dull corners, on t. 72 damaged title-pieces; 1 limin. f. missing on t.1 ; some light spotting, some very lightly browned signatures). Without doubt the most famous edition of Voltaire's complete works. Published by the oins of Beaumarchais, it contains in particular a large part of Voltaire's correspondence in its original edition. A copy printed on vellum paper, with large margins. Only the copies on large paper include the complete illustration which consists of : 1 title-frontispiece with the bust of Voltaire by Moreau, a dedication with the portrait of Fr.-Guillaume by Pourbus, and 93 figures by Moreau interpreted by various engravers, 16 portraits; as well as 14 folding plates of physics (Cohen for his part indicates 14 portraits "and 5 additional portraits", of which only 2 must be in this copy). "This suite is one of Moreau's masterpieces and is sustained without a lapse from one end to the other for nearly a hundred compositions." (Cohen, 1042-1046).
