[Incunabula]. PIE II (pope). Silvii Aeneae... - Lot 15 - Kâ-Mondo
[Incunabula]. PIE II (pope). Silvii Aeneae poetae qui postea su[m]mi Pontificatus gradu[m] adeptus Pius e[st] appellatus. Historia de duobus ama[n]tibus cu[m] multis epistolis amatoriis. [Vicenza (?), Johannes de Reno or Henricus de Sancto Ursio (?), c.1475]. In-4, [34] f. [sign. a8, b10, c-d8], green basane pastiche, smooth spine, gilt date, boards entirely decorated with a set of gilt fleurons, and bordered with gilt fillets and roulettes, gilt roulette on the endpapers (headbands and spines rubbed, upper spine cracked; worms stinging through the text without damage at the beginning of the volume, foxing and soiling not serious, 2 leaves, a1 and a8 replaced by photographic reproductions). Rare incunabula edition of this humanist erotica, composed by Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini in 1444, before his entry into the orders. It was later disavowed and condemned by its author, who became Pope Pius II. With a remarkable success, it was the object of a dozen incunabula editions, of which this one is one of the first, and did not cease to be republished and translated in the following centuries, until critical editions appeared in the 20th century. Initials painted in red or blue, at the time, on the typographed endpapers. Some old annotations and underlining.
