Paganum, 1554. In-8, [24] f., 416 p., contemporary saddle-skin on wooden boards, spine with 3 double nerves, handwritten title on velvet etiquette, boards decorated with cold fillets and a double frame of casters, one of which with characters, clasps (some rubbing to the nerves, spines and boards, spine washed with trace of etiquette), small tears skilfully restored to title, small halo in head margins, browning, light wetness in lat. margins at end of volume). Rare Lyon edition of these commentaries on Aristotle's Physics by the German theologian J. Toltz von Veltkirch (1490-1534), who taught physics in Wittenberg from 1520 onwards. The Strasbourg physician and scholar Sebald Hauenreuter (1508-1589) took part in this edition and signed the dedication to the abbot of Alpersbach. (USTC 126302). Bound afterwards: GEMMA FRISIUS. Arithmeticae practicae methodus facilis Lugduni, apud J. Toraesium et G. Gazeium, 1556. 191 p. Edition revised and enlarged by the author; with annotations by Jacques Peletier (often called "du Mans"), mathematician and humanist poet (1517-1583), and two small texts of his own composition: De fractionibus astronomicis compendium; De cognoscendis per memoriam calendis (USTC 151950). Beautiful set of two important publications concerning physics and astronomy in the 16th century, in a classic ornate Germanic binding dated 1567. Some very rare early annotations in red ink.
