JUNIUS (pseud.). The letters of Junius complete : interspers - Lot 464
JUNIUS (pseud.). The letters of Junius complete : interspersed with the letters and articles to which he replied, and with notes, biographical and explanatory [London], printed for Richard Phillips, 1806. 2 vols. in-12, [1] f., LXXXIV-355 p. + [1] f., IV-385 p., [3] f., pl., long-grained red morocco, spine with 5 nerves, title, tomaison, gilt fillets, fleurons and roulettes, boards bordered with a gilt decoration composed of double fillets and irons, with angular fleurons, gilt roulette at the necks and chasses, gilt edges [Simier] (small stains on the boards; light wetness at the head of the title and in the margin of the front, moderate russeting and browning.) A fine copy, bound by Simier, of this collection of letters in support of the opposition to King George III, composed by the English pamphleteer known as Junius, and originally published between 1769 and 1772. Much has been written about the mystery of who this author was, and here John Almon's preface is no exception, reviewing several supposed authors and seemingly leaning toward Hugh Macauley Boyd (1746-1794). Printed on wove paper, and illustrated with 3 engraved portraits and a folding facsimile out of the text. Small engraving showing a figure from the back pasted to the v° of the title. Old signature " A. Monjean" at the head of the title.
