JAPON : Triptyque par YOSHITOSHI - Lot 129
JAPON : Triptyque par YOSHITOSHI JAPAN: Triptych by YOSHITOSHI, The God of Wisdom Fudô Myô-ô (cf. Acala), nicknamed the Immutable, having left his pedestal with the flaming mandore, to grab and threaten Yuten, a young student who considered himself too uneducated and who, following this appearance, would become a great master of a movement of Buddhism. On the left, one of the two waiting for Fudô, Kongara Dôji looking at the scene, leaning on his mace, on the right appears Benten or the second waiting for Seitaka Dôji holding a lotus branch. Signature in a cartouche on the left hand side of the YOSHITOSHI leaf and followed by his Taïsô seal. Chôkô (engraved by) Enkatsu. Edited by Akiyama Buemon in 1885. Superb print and colors, excellent condition (two very small tears in the border, without missing, on the central sheet). During this appearance, Fudô came with two swords, one blunt. The god offered him to choose one and swallow it as punishment for all the sins he had committed. Yûten chose the sharper one and when Fudô thrust the blade down his throat, all the bad blood came out of his body and the young apprentice became a very erudite priest. (CF Koji Hôten vol II/II p.494, V.-F. Weber, 1st edition in 1923). Notes: Similar copy at the MFA (Museum of Fine Art) Boston, under no. 11.21637-9 (don William Sturgis Bigelow) Vertical Ôban Triptych by YOSHITOSHI (1839-1892). "Chokô" (engraved by) Enkatsu (seal on bottom left). Edited by Akiyama buemon in 1885. Superb colors and impression, excellent condition (2 tiny rips -without any missing part- on the right border of the central sheet). Full images, unbacked, with mica parts. The God of wisdom Fudô Myô-ô threatening the young monk apprentice Yûten who choose the most sharpened sword between the 2 that has been brought. Allowing him to expell all his sins. He will then become one of the greatest monk of his time.
