Daughter of Léon Bouthillier, Count of Chavigny, Secretary and Minister of State and Anne Phélypeaux de Villesavin. Placed very young by her parents to be raised at Port-Royal, Renée entered the nobility of Rouen through her marriage to the son of President Beuzelin, Jean III Beuzelin who succeeded his father in the Parliament. The couple had a daughter, Anne-Marie Beuzelin. Renée Bouthillier de Chavigny died in Rouen on 19 March 1711. This portrait belongs to the old collection of portraits of the Bosmelet family. de Bosmelet family; its representation with a cogwheel evokes the martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and is perhaps not without the model's personal devotion to this saint.
