François de TROY (1645-1730) - Lot 84
François de TROY (1645-1730) Portrait of Henri-Jacques Nompar de Caumont, duke of La Force in ducal coat (1675-1726). Canvas transposed to canvas. 130 × 96 cm. (Restorations and lifts). Carved and gilded wood frame from the 18th century. We thank Mr. Dominique Brême who confirmed the attribution. "He had a lot of spirit, he was highly educated; he was a strong duke and peer, and very incapable of warping" (Saint-Simon). It is not common to see a French duke in full regalia with his hand resting on his peer's hat. The Dukes de La Force obtained the peerage in 1637. Henri-Jacques Nompar de Caumont was chosen on September 5, 1712 as protector of the Royal Academy of Letters, Sciences and Arts of Bordeaux, then elected to the French Academy on January 19 January 19, 1715. Close to the court of Sceaux, he presided over the Eighth Night organized by the Duke and Duchess du Maine. A fervent defender of John Law's monetary system, at the end of 1720 he was accused of dishonest enrichment with the royal bank, which led to his eviction from the Regency Council.
