BOISGELIN DE CUCÉ (Jean Raymond de). The... - Lot 14 - Kâ-Mondo
BOISGELIN DE CUCÉ (Jean Raymond de). The Temple of Gnidus. S.l., s.n., [1782]. In-8, 83 p., contemporary red morocco, smooth spine decorated with small irons, gilt title, roulette and fillets bordering the boards, with angular fleurons, all gilt, inner roulette, gilt edges (some foxing). Extremely rare erotic piece in verse inspired by Montesquieu's Temple of Gnide. It is the work of J. R. de Boisgelin de Cucé (1732-1804), member of the French Academy, archbishop of Aix-en-Provence at the time, who was also a deputy in 1789 and ended up promoted to cardinal in 1803. He certainly had this piece printed in a limited number of copies, which he reserved for his close friends. The only copy reported to the BnF is kept in the Rare Book Reserve. "It is the publication of the Temple de Gnide, of his Poésies diverses, almost all erotic [] which made Boisgelin understood in the Dictionnaire des athées of Sylvain Maréchal" (Michaud, Biogr. univ. IV, 1843). Brunet (IV, 1150), mentions this Temple de Gnide after a collection of "Pièces diverses" by Boisgelin, which he indicates is composed of poems, "mostly erotic, and even a little free". And he specifies about this collection, "printed in such a small number of copies, that there are few modern books as rare as this one". (L. Desgraves, Répertoire des articles et des ouvrages sur Montesquieu, 1988, n°1859). Provenance: stamp with the monogram JE (?) framed by 2 wings and the motto "Adjuvante Deo", which could designate Du Pin de Saint-André (19th c.).
