MAUGARD (Antoine). Remarks on the nobility, dedicated to the - Lot 82
MAUGARD (Antoine). Remarks on the nobility, dedicated to the Provincial Assemblies. In Paris, Lamy and Gattey, 1788. In-8, [2] f., LXX-335 p., [2] f. (privil.), contemporary red morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, dotted lines and small irons, green morocco title-piece, triple gilt fillet bordering the boards, large gilt coat of arms in the centre, gilt fillet at the edges, gilt roulette at the foot of the boards, gilt edges (one corner dulled, one crushed, 4 negligible worm holes at the spines; stains on the text in most of the volume, charcoal marks on p.136, hole touching 2 letters on p.269). Copy bound with the arms of Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé (1736-1818), grand master of the King's household and peer of France, lieutenant-general of the King's armies during the Seven Years' War, governor of Burgundy and Bresse, leader of one of the counter-revolutionary armies formed by the French emigrés. Second edition, by far the most complete, amply enriched by the author, Antoine Maugard (1739-1817), historian, genealogist of the Order of Saint-Hubert, with dissertations and historical notes: the original published in 1787 had only 75 pages. His autograph signature appears at the end of the Foreword. Provenance: Bibliotheca Elseghemensis (lithogr. bookplate).
