[PLACENTIUS (Joannes Leo)]. 1. Papa Pariens! 2. Porcus Pugna - Lot 113
[PLACENTIUS (Joannes Leo)]. 1. Papa Pariens! 2. Porcus Pugnans! 3. Priapus Periclitans! 4. Papasinus! S.l. [Germany], s.n., Anno M. DC. XC. [1690]. Four parts in 1 vol. in-4, [1] f. (manuscript title), [8] [8] [4] [8] f., paperback, old black marbled cover, vignette with manuscript title on cover (spine rubbed, browning). Extremely rare collection of four neo-Latin satirical and anticlerical texts. The second, "Porcus Pugnans", is the work of Joannes Leo Placentius, a Dominican and poet from Liège, born in 1500 and died around 1548, also known as Jean Léon Plaisant, and under the pseudonym Petrus Porcius. First published in Augsburg by Steiner in 1530, under the title Pugna Porcorum, this poem of 253 Latin hexameters is a remarkable tautogram, with each word beginning with the letter "P". Such a feat worthy of our modern Oulipo could not be accomplished with Latin words alone, so the author introduces German terms completed with Latin endings, and other liberties found in so-called grotesque or macaronic poetry. The other three pieces remain anonymous to our knowledge. The first, in prose, is also a tautogram where each word begins with "P". The third, "Priapus periclitans", composed of 20 stanzas of 4 verses, relates the meeting of twenty Jesuits, whose preoccupation is formulated in the subtitle, "Rector vult testiculos nostros detondere" The last piece is in Latin verse, with marginal notes printed in German. Gustave Brunet points out that this collection of "4 small pieces printed in Germany" has remained, to his knowledge, "almost unknown to amateurs of these tautogrammatic compositions" (Notices et extraits de quelques ouvrages écrits en patois, 1840, p.146, note a.)
