[Qur'an]. Sura Y Sn. India or Iran, 19th century. Engraved o - Lot 189
[Qur'an]. Sura Y Sn. India or Iran, 19th century. Engraved on 20 copper leaves bound by two copper rings. Upper board decorated with vegetal and floral decoration covering, in the Indian style, a poly-lobed cartouche surrounding the title. Lower board engraved with a cartouche with vegetal decoration flanked by four fleurons. Text engraved in naskh script and enhanced with ochre paint, one column of seven lines per page, numbered in Arabic numerals. Sura Y Sn, the 36th in the Qur'an according to the traditional order, is a composite text attributed to the Mecca period of Muhammad's life (570-622). This sura, traditionally recited to the dying, is presented as a series of parables alluding to the prophets and the last ends, and is probably collected for this reason. Some authors see its concise and allusive style as evidence of a midrashic type of commentary, addressed to a community familiar with the biblical text. Bibliography: J.
