Two works in 1 large vol. in-8, [10] f., p.[IX]-LVI, 458 p., continuous, [1] f., half havana morocco with corners, spine with 5 nerves, author, title, date and gilt fleurons, double cold fillet on the boards, gilt head, covers and illustrated spine preserved, covers of the Gallery of Portraits and Illustrations preserved [Dupré] (tail edges very slightly rubbed). Famous edition considered as one of the most beautiful productions of the romantic period. The illustration consists of about 450 woodcut vignettes in the text after Tony Johannot, Français, Meissonier, Paul Huet, Isabey, Marville, Steinheil, etc., and 37 plates on Chine appliqué protected by captioned serpents, of which 29 woodcut figures, 7 steel-engraved portraits and a coloured map of Mauritius titled "Ile de France dressée par A.H. Dufour, 1836 et gravée par Dyonnet". Second printed title, with the address rue de Richelieu. Bound with all its margins. (Carteret, III, 532-547).
